For Students

Courses

The Realistic Graphics Lab teaches two courses at EPFL. See the links below for more detail.

Fall semester, 4 credits
Visual computing and artificial intelligence rely on numerical algorithms to process large amounts of information such as images, shapes, and 3D volumes. This course familiarizes students with essential numerical tools for solving practical problems in this area.
Spring semester, 8 credits
This course covers advanced 3D graphics techniques for realistic image synthesis. Students will learn how light interacts with objects in our world, and how to recreate these phenomena in a computer simulation to create synthetic images that are indistinguishable from photographs.

Semester & Master's Thesis Projects

RGL offers various projects in the areas of rendering, inverse rendering, and material appearance modeling. To qualify, you must have taken CS-328, ideally CS-440, or an equivalent course at another university. Please reach out to Prof. Jakob with details about your background (include a CV) and your interest in these areas. The specific project is generally selected after an in-person meeting.

Prospective PhD Students

EPFL's School of Computer and Communication Sciences runs a US-style PhD program called EDIC. Instead of directly applying to a specific lab like RGL, please send your application to the doctoral program, whose main application deadline is December 15 every year. Following your application, expect a 1:1 Zoom interview some time in early January.

Internships

RGL only accepts interns through Summer in the Lab for EPFL students and Summer@EPFL for international students. Please reach out if you were admitted to either of these programs and are interested in an internship at RGL. Besides these two options, RGL sometimes also directly hosts EPFL students with outstanding performance in CS-328 or CS-440.
